Ukrainian films > Welcome to Ukraine > Film studios > The National Dovzhenko Feature Film Studio

The National Dovzhenko Feature Film Studio, the leader of Ukrainian cinema, is on the threshold of its 80's. During the time of studio's existence the cultural centre has enriched mental (inner) world of more than one generation of spectators.

Creative biography of the film studio began in March 1928, when the first film "Van'ka i Mesnyk" ("Ivan and Avenger" directed by Axel Lundin) appeared at the screens.

Since then more than 1000 films has been shot at the studio. The main part of them received awards at the prestigious film forums. Each 20th film was a leader in film distribution at the screens in the former USSR. Such difficult films, as "Bohdan Khmelnytsky", "Trysta Rokiv Tomu" ("300 Years Ago"), "Yaroslav Mudry" ("Yaroslav The Wise"), "Legenda Pro Kniahunju Olgu" (The Legend About Princess Olga) and also the well known all over the world "Podvig Razvedchika" (Feat of the Scout, which is one of fifth best adventure films about the war), were made at the studio. Two Studio's films, one is a feature film and another one is a documentary, were a part of thesaurus of world cinematography, being the best films at all times for all nations. They are "Zemlia" (The Earth) by O. Dovzhenko and "Ludyna z Kinoaparatom" ("A Man with a Movie Camera") by Dz. Vertov.

Twice Studio's films were named by British Academy of Cinema as the best films of a year. They are "Dorogoju Tsinoju" ("At an Exorbitant Price") by M. Donskoi and "Tini Zabutykh Predkiv" ("Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors") by S. Paradzhanov. The film "Raduga" ("The Rainbow") by M. Donskoi received the IFRG Unity award «to Ukrainian Studios for Outstanding Contribution to Universal Understanding Through the Medium of Motion Pictures by Production of the «Rainbow» in 1945».

During the last period of time the Film Studio has considerably cut the production volume which is connected with reconstruction of all spheres in social and national life and limited financing. But studio's creative activities are going on: there are more 12 feature films in plans for 2008. As it was long time ago, our films introduce Ukraine at the international film festivals with a dignity.

Thus the prize-winners of the last film forums became: "Vsem Privet" ("Hello to Everybody") by Dm. Tomashpolski, "Shum Vetra" ("The Noise of the Wind") by S. Masloboischikov, "Taina Kievo-Pecherskoi Lavry" ("The Mystery of Kiev Pechersk Monastery") by M. Ilinski, "Zalizna Sotnya"("The Iron Hundred") by O. Janchuk, "Mamaj" by O. Sanin, "Prybluda" ("The Stray") by V. Jamburski, "Filosifia" ("The Philosophy") by A. Pasikova. Today the Film Studio is a modern film concern, which is able to accomplish any task connected with creating films of any genre and various production difficulties. The Film Studio has: 5 studios, domestic and foreign filming equipment, fully appointed sound stage, arsenal of native and foreign items of weapon, unique collection of historical and modern costumes and dresses collected various properties of furniture, passenger and cargo motor transport.

Technical abilities of the Film Studio, its creative potential and high professionalism of the staff are capable of doing the most difficult tasks, connected with film industry.
