News > International Documentary Film Event “Humanity in the World”.

28 March 2009

A documentary film festival which presents the role of the moving image in modern society. Newly-produced films from all corners of the world. Focused on Europe, but with a repertoire that stretches all the way to Korea, Israel, Palestine, Nepal, Iran and the USA. Films which travel between the past and the present. About ethnic and religious conflicts today, everything from issues surrounding the Holocaust to current dictators.

The International Documentary Film Event now returns for the seventh time. “Humanity in the World” is the central theme, one which is explored in a program packed with the world’s best documentary films on the subject. Film is examined as an educational, political, and artistic instrument, a demonstration of the medium’s power to influence and expand understanding for democracy and tolerance. Alongside the films themselves a further exploration of the subject will take place through debates, conversations, and seminars at the Museum of Ethnography in Stockholm, April 2-5, 2009.

The Festival will be kicked off by Cecilia Wikström, member of the Swedish parliament, and vice president of the Cultural Committee. For this event we have endeavoured to match the cultural diversity of the films with an equally-interesting gathering of guests. We are therefore proud to be able to now present visits by such interesting and insightful people as Dagmar Havel (wife of the former president of the Czech Republic), Adam Rotfeld (former Minister of Foreign Affairs in Poland),

Andriy Khalpakhchi (head of Ukraine’s National Film Festival “Molodist”), Viktar Dashuk from Belarus (who has just released the film Femida), and Kateryna Yushchenko (wife of the president of Ukraine) who will read a letter from the president of Ukraine concerning the festival’s message about humanity in the world today. We have also invited cultural attachés from touched-upon countries, as well as ambassadors who will address audiences before the film screenings. World-class documentary film directors from Romania, Israel, Poland, Serbia, and the USA will visit the festival and participate in seminars.

During the film festival the international café will offer specialities from around the world, and is also intended to serve as a forum for discussions of the films.
